Ask Mr. Rat
Most of my original stories of my life and adventures on Roi-Namur have already been published on this site so I decided to start a new feature. You the reader can ask me questions, preferably about life on Roi or there abouts, and I will answer them. I have already opened up my mail bag and here are some of my first questions.
Q: Mr. Rat, I am planning on retiring next year and am considering moving to Tucson. How can I find in-depth information on a variety of topics having to do with Tucson? - George W B of Washington, DC
A: I’m glad you asked me that George, if I want to know anything about Tucson, whether it would be golf courses, parks where I can walk my dog (if I had one), great restaurants, hiking or a variety of other subjects I go to www.tucsoncomplete.com.
Q: Mr. Rat, I live in Tucson but do not see my favorite restaurant listed yet but would like to add it to tucsoncomplete.com. Is it very hard to do? - Martha S. - Chicago, IL
A: No Martha, in fact it is quite easy. www.tucsoncomplete.com has a wiki format, not too unlike wikipedia.com. All you need to do is register and then add your own page. You can register by first clicking on the login text on the left side of the welcome page. Look at the source for another page such as Bison Witches and use that as an example on how to add your page. The original author of www.tucsoncomplete.com, my friend Richard, welcomes and encourages other contributers.
Q: Mr. Rat, How come one of the pages on tucsoncomplete.com was written in the first person but the others were written in the third person like the ones Rich wrote, thus looking far more professional? - Idi A. Riyadh, KSA
A: First person, second person, third person, what’s a few persons among friends. No need to quibble about such mundane matters or to mention who the author was of that particular page. The important thing is that all subsequent pages written by that particular author were written in the 3rd person.
Q:Mr. Rat, why did you start roiratjournal.com? - Mark Magda of Brookpark, Ohio
A: Good question Mark, while living on Roi I started to write these articles to my friends and family back in the states. They encouraged me to publish them in a book and I decided to get ready for that I would first put them on a web-site.
Q: Mr. Rat, What is the one thing you miss the most about living on Roi-Namur? - Robert L, Texas
A: Diving, sailing, the KVZI 97.9 FM Roi-Namur Rastaman Vibration Reggae Hour(s), Tribal Fusion, and my friends there.
Q: Mr. Rat, Isn’t that 5 things? - Ray L. - Baltimore, MD
A: You’re right Ray and I’m going to resist making any comments about the city I hate such as ‘it just goes to show that people in Baltimore are not neccessarily stupid, just evil.’
Q: Mr. Rat, What would you like for Christmas? - Bill G. - Redmond, WA
A: A new dive computer to replace the one that got flooded on one of my trips to San Carlos last summer would be well receieved. Also, you can never go far wrong with money or Amazon.com gift certificates.
Q: Mr. Rat, Are there any moments in particular that stick in your mind from your time on Roi? - Siegmund F.
A: Well Sieggy, there is one time in particular. About 4 of us were headed out North Pass when we spotted a School (or is it pod?) of Dolphins. Eric and I donned our snorkel gear and jumped in the water with them. It was a beautiful moment that I will always treasure and let me go on record that I don’t usually treasure moments with other dudes, it was the dolphins that made it special.
Q: Mr. Rat, I believe pod it the correct term and aren’t we the ones who are suppose to be asking you the questions? - J. Cousteau, France
A: Do you think so?
Q: Mr. Rat, what were some of the other names that were suggested for the sensational reggae band you played with while on Kwajalein Atoll? - L. S. Perry - Kingston, Jamaica
A: I suggested “Wise Guys” (our singer’s name was Wise Rokobili). Think of any name with the word Dread in it and I probably suggested it too. We also had various other combinations of words with Tribal and/or Dread appearing in it.
Q: Mr Rat, was it wise for you to suggest those names? Otherwise you could have thought of something better? - Steve - Roi-Namur
A: I like to think I’m too mature to use such play on words, especially when it involves other peoples names. Ericgardless, any Joe could think of such a thing and Tribal Fusion really was a great name.
Q: Mr. Rat, does Tribal Fusion have a reunion tour planned? - Don H. - California
A: When hell freezes over.
Q: Is it true that you scored the second highest point total in Buzztime trivia 6 game at the Tucson Buffalo Wild Wings this September? - Dave J. - Marana, AZ
A: I don’t really keep tract of such unimportant things and whether it was 50656 or some other score is not important.
A: No I didn’t get it tattooed on any part of my body
Q: Shouldn’t you take a break and eat some supper? - Dorothy B. - Stuart, FL
A: OK Mom. Keep those cards and letters coming.

You know… a bunch of these questions sound as if they may have come from a Brown Backer. I would like to pose the following questions for the next Ask Mr Rat post. - Did the gears on the bikes rust due to lack of maintenance, were they ever maintained? - Does Mr Rat have any affiliation with Husky bicycles or their womens bicycle department? - Are there any restroom provisions one must remember to provide such as buckets for water or anything along these lines? - I hear you dive with sharks… whats wrong with you dude??? - Ever experience any paranormal activity on Roi-Namur or any of its neighboring islands? - Noone ever tried to steal your hammock??? What ere there no Americans there or something??? - Did your radio station have one of those old style microphones like in Good Morning Vietnam? - Ever attempt to lay in the radar domes or dishes to keep warm? Was this specifically discouraged? - If you were circumnavigating the world in a schnazzy sailboat… would this be one of your scheduled stops? That is all. |
