Hot Nights On Roi-Namur

It isn’t just the weather that is hot here on Roi-Namur. We have had a couple of big time social occasions that lively up our stay here. Last Friday, the ska band Fighting Gravity(http://www.fightinggravity.com/home.html) appeared here at the Outrigger Club on Roi-Namur. They were supposed to go to a different island but for some reason were not able to so they got to Kwaj a couple of days early. Since they had the extra time, someone decided they could come up to tiny Roi and give a concert for us. It was great! This was probably THE major social event of the year for us. Almost everyone on the island who wasn’t working turned up. We might have had close to a hundred people packed into the Outrigger. I’ve seen movies or read about in books of back in the day when three would be a hoe down in a western town and everyone in town would show up for it. This was just like that. It was like we were all starvved for some sort of decent entertainment and could not stay asway. The band didn’t let us down either. They really rocked! Although I described them as ska they really played an eclectic collection featuring everything from such Reggae classics as 54-46 (Toots and the Maytails) I don’t want to wait in vein for your love (Bob Marley) to Crazy Town by Ozzie Osbourne (They did that one special for one of the guyts here who was an Ozzie fan). They did some modern songs too and a lot of their own material. I guess they have 6 albums out, their most recent being “Hello Cleveland”. But they’ve never been to my home town of Cleveland. They just named it that because they thought Cleveland was a cool place (they’re right). The singer had a really strong voice. They had another guy who played trombone, flute, keyboards, and guitar (not simultaneously). He was the one who “sang” the rap song instead of the regular singer. Their guitarist and bass player were really good too.
After the show they joined a few of us for a party on the beach. The singer plopped himself down on a chair next to me and we talked for quite a while about everything from music, touring, to raising kids. He had some advice for me which I took with a grain of salt considering he is 35 and never married or had kids but he was a real nice guy as were the rest of the band.
